This blog will include tales from our journey along with highlights of my current endeavors, photography related and otherwise.  I hope you enjoy these musings and find some inspiration, as I have, from a little red horse named BTA Desert Moonfyre.

2017 Houston Dressage Society Winter Show

February 07, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

It was a blustery day at the Houston Dressage Society Winter Show.  Gusts reaching up to 50 miles per hour created treacherous riding conditions, ripping down wind screens in the Tellepsen Arena and knocking out lights in the main ring.  But none of this phased CS Atmospheric (aka, Simon) as he performed a lovely second level test in spite of the turbulent weather.

As a show photographer, it is always such a pleasure to see these rock solid horses, who are not only beautiful, but happy in their work.  And this one just happens to be for sale!  He will certainly make a wonderful mount for someone in search of a lovely, talented and versatile horse.

Sandie and Toby

February 02, 2017  •  1 Comment

Sandie scheduled her photo session, unsure how much longer her beloved Toby could endure a severe case of laminitis. Her goal was to capture some beautiful portraits with her faithful friend before he succumbed to the pain of founder.   However, this amazing horse has defied the odds and is beginning to get a little spring back in his step!  I believe Sandie's love and devotion might have something to do his remarkable recovery.

In her own words...

This is the story of Mr. Incredible. With all the turmoil in the world, Toby is often my quiet strength. He’s always been special in my eyes, but recently he has shown me another aspect of courage – to keep moving forward despite your limitations, perceived or otherwise. Earlier this year, Toby foundered – a bone in each of his two front feet had dropped away from the inside of the hoof wall and was pressing down on the soles. It’s very painful and most often the horse does not survive. But then again, we’re talking about Toby here. He just doesn’t give up. Ever. With the incredible help and inventiveness of Veterinarian Dr. E.W. Hildreth and farrier Jason Koffel and others Toby is still walking. In fact, he took off at a gallop in his pen just a few days ago – completely astounding us all in the process! I hadn’t seen him run in almost a year. We can’t believe he is walking, much less running around like the proud Arabian horse he is with his tail up over his back! He’s always kept that sparkle in his eyes and even though he probably didn’t feel like moving forward sometimes, he did and hopefully because of this he’ll be in my life for many years to come. There’s something to be said for tenacity, resolve, and creativity – the team that’s been taking care of him has all of these and more. Heartfelt thanks to all of them for their amazing care and hard work.

Mother's Day Dressage Show at Solstice Farms

May 19, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

It's hard to imagine amidst the hustle and bustle of Houston city life there exist a sanctuary for equestrians so close to town.  Just 17 miles from downtown, and only 3 miles from NRG Stadium, Solstice Farms is located on over 20 acres, with plenty of grassy turnout and both covered and outdoor riding arenas.  Dressage lessons are available with USDF Certified Instructor Marie Morgan, recipient of the Region 9 Teaching Excellence Award.  Training is available from HA and B Pony Club graduate, Katie White. In addition, Solstice Farms is host to regular clinics and 3 to 4 Houston Dressage Society schooling shows per year.

It was my pleasure to photograph the Mother's Day Dressage Schooling Show on May 7th. Horses and riders demonstrated their ability to perform certain elements of training through "tests", which are judged and scored by individual movement.  Tests begin with basic elements in the Introductory classes and go all the way up to very advanced movements at the Grand Prix level.  Every horse and rider can benefit from dressage training, as it is the foundation for every equestrian discipline.  Schooling shows provide a relaxed atmosphere where riders can show off their skills and get feedback on their and their horse's performance.  During my brief show ccareer, I liked to think of the test score sheet as a "report card" (although feedback from the judges ranged from "horse looks bored" to "horse is very, very naughty").

Photographs from the show are available for viewing and purchase in our online gallery.

For more information about dressage lessons, training and boarding at Solstice Farms, please contact Marie Morgan.

May 17, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

Since 2013, Moonfyre Photography has proudly served as the official photographer for the Spindletop Arabian Horse Club Spring Show.  Photography coverage at this year's show will be available by request.  The $25 shooting fee includes an individual online gallery and a special offer on your entire collection of show photos.   We may be taking action shots and candid photos randomly throughout the show, however the only way to guarantee your horse is photographed is to sign up for our services. This change in how we are covering these smaller shows allows us to provide better service to the exhibitors most interested in show photos, as well as the ability to provide personalized portrait sessions during the show.

Outdoor portrait and "lifestyle" photo sessions are available for a $50 sitting fee.  This is a perfect opportunity to create beautiful, artistic portraits of your horse at our show special prices and/or document your horse show experience.

To sign up for show photos or to schedule a portrait session, click here, or  contact Kristie with your name, cell phone number, email address, horse's name (and a brief description), exhibitor number (when available), class numbers and approximate class times and/or times available for outdoor portraits.  Payment may be made by cash or check at the show, or by credit card via PayPal.

We are excited about the opportunity to photograph this year's show, and look forward to seeing you there!

The Dragon in My Dreams- Inspired Musings of a Texas Equestrian Photographer

May 16, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

Welcome to Moonfyre Photography!

Now, you may be wondering what is up with the name, as I am often asked that question. It all started with a dream… a series of recurring dreams, actually… about a red horse with a golden mane.  But he wasn't just an ordinary horse, but an amazing dragon-like creature, with flaring nostrils and a white blaze on his face like a streak of lightening.  He was a bold and powerful creature, yet brave and gentle and protective as he would carry me through the woods, his feet never touching the ground.

And then, two years later… there he was, in an ad!  I found him! The horse from my dream! The dragon in my dreams!  MY horse! From that vey moment, I knew he would be mine, and what an adventure it has been ever since. I will save the tale (along with many, many others!) of how this dream became reality for another day, as that turned out to be quite an adventure itself!

This blog will include flashbacks from our journey along with highlights of my current endeavors, photography related and otherwise.  I hope you enjoy our stories, and find some inspiration as I have from a little red horse name BTA Desert Moonfyre.
